Last year, I remember attending Dr. Irene Pepperberg's lecture at Rice and being completely floored and in love with this bird. He showed us that an animal could in fact communicate with humans, and even more amazingly, he could be seen to operate with the mental capacity of a 2-year old child. From what she mentioned in her lecture, I remember that Alex had begun to teach what he learned to their new, younger birds. Perhaps he knew how important it was for research to continue.
